2025 Season Recap

 Here’s a relative rarity for us, we actually managed to get team photos at the WYC banquet!



A fun end to a challenging season. As our 2025 trophy frame states, this was ‘the summer where we weathered storms and adjusted our sails’



Due to medical issues and family things, we only ended up racing in about half the number of our typical WYC races. This made it almost impossible to do well in any series event, because in each major series we had races that we had to score as DNC (Did Not Come). In actual numbers, we showed up for 25, but due to light airs this summer only 12 of those races were sailed and scored! The other half were abandoned due to lack of wind. At WYC we will normally race if there is 5 knots of wind over the course, so you can tell how light it was this year.




But it’s a show of our determination and capability that we won both of the single day regattas, the distance race Burton cup, and the windward/leeward Frostbite cup. And we ended up 3rd in the bitterly contested T-Series, while having to score a DNC!

Jean asked if we actually had a trophy wall of pictures, and we sort of do. It’s not big enough for all of them so we just have 10 (or 8!) up there, with two or three laying in the closet somewhere. I went and added up the results, and from the frames I could find, and over the 12 years we have 25 1st place results, and 50 podium finishes. Nice.




Pretty solid results for a full on cruising boat! 🙂 Great job this year team, I really appreciate your skill, perseverance, and determination. And a special shout-out to Jodi who is the love of my life and my rock through good times and bad. None of this would be possible without her, and none of of this would be worth anything without her by my side.

LED Nav/anchor replacement bulb

Depending on the build year and the market, the First 260 often came with a single light at the mast top, most typically a red/green/white navigation light. Designed for offshore/coastal use, the fixture placed the light source high where it was easily seen. The single light has its disadvantage however, the primary one being that there is no provision for an anchor light. You CAN replace the fixture to a stacked nav/anchor light, but beyond that being expensive, you still need to run another set of 12v wires to the top of the mast, and add a switch to your DC panel to control it. So most boats stayed rigged in the original manner. A later option was a LED replacement fixture from NASA Marine in the UK. Called the Combi-LED, this light had the innovative ability to be controlled by ONE 12V wire pair, meaning no new wires to be pulled. Spinnaker Handling: Twings

A recent addition to modern spinnaker handling are a set of control lines called 'twings'. Twings are used to control the position of the spinnaker sheet and guy to shape the sail, and although they are not standard rigging from Beneteau, they are easy to rig on a First 260 or First 25s.   In the picture, you can see both the sheet and guy. Although hidden on the port (guy) side, you can see the twing attached to the sheet of starboard, holding it slightly down to give a better lead angle to the clew. This gives better sail shape. On the pole side, the twing helps the pole-down line control pole position. This diagram gives a good feel for how the lines are laid out. Ideally, you can control the twing from the cockpit as shown.
